El Clasico – Real Madrid FC Barcelona

There is often a fierce rivalry between the two strongest teams in a national league, and this is particularly the case in La Liga, where the game between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is known as El Cl?sico. From the start the clubs were seen as representatives of two rival regions in Spain, Catalonia and Castile, as well as of the two cities themselves. The rivalry projects what many regard as the political and cultural tensions felt between Catalans and the Castilians.

During the dictatorships of Primo de Rivera and (especially) of Francisco Franco, all regional identities were openly suppressed (e.g. the peripheral languages were officially banned). So FC Barcelona became more than a club (m?s que un club) for Catalonia as a defender of freedom and one of its greatest ambassadors. On the contrary, for most of the Catalans and many other Spaniards, Real Madrid was representing the sovereign oppressive centralism.

However, during the Spanish Civil War itself, members of both clubs, like Josep Sunyol and Rafael S?nchez Guerra, suffered at the hands of Franco supporters.

During the 1950s the rivalry was exacerbated significantly when the clubs disputed the signing of Alfredo Di Stefano, who finally played for Real Madrid, thanks to the help of Franco, who transfered him to Real Madrid by “royal decree” after playing three games with Barcelona’s shirt, who was the key in the subsequent success achieved by the club. The 1960s saw the rivalry reach the European stage when they met twice at the semi-final stage of the European Cup.

As nowadays FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two biggest and most successful clubs in Spain, the rivalry is renewed on an almost annual basis with both teams often challenging each other for the league championship. The latest Clasico was played in the Camp Nou and ended with a 3-3 draw, with Lionel Messi scoring his first hat-trick in his Clasico debut at the Camp Nou.

It is more important for Lyon and Marseille to finish in the top three in Ligue 1 than going on a European adventure and in the first round of matches both Lyon and Marseille face tricky away ties. Liverpool learns from AFC Ajax

Steve Cooper is a guest at Ajax this week. The Liverpool FC youth academy manager is in Amsterdam to learn from Ajax’s youth academy. During his visit to the future, he plans to meet with staff and observe trainings, among other things.
Luis Suarez didn’t even need to do anything to bring the Ajax and Liverpool youth academies together. The star player of the Premier League’s current number six team could have facilitated the contact, given his Ajax history. But it turned out that the Uruguayan’s help wasn’t needed, as technical director Damian Camolli had already arranged a four day visit for Liverpool’s youth academy manager.

Cooper illustrates the current situation with Liverpool’s youth academy with an eye-opening example. Several players who participated in the AEGON Future Cup in the spring of 2010 with the U-17 team are now part of Liverpool’s A-selection. Thus Jack Robinson and Jon Flanagan have since made their debut for The Reds. They tread in the footsteps of such greats as Steve Gerrard, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler, who all came up through the ranks of the 18 time national champion club. “Liverpool fans love to see that. We’re a club of tradition, where home grown players have a special place. That’s why it’s so important for us to keep developing our youth academy”, says Cooper.

During his visit to Amsterdam, Cooper hopes to learn mainly about the program’s structure. Because of this, he spoke extensively with Ger Boer, the academic coordinator, about the curriculum at de Toekomst. Moreover, the Toekomst training staff has been something of a walking encyclopaedia for the head of Liverpool’s youth academy. Heini Otto has shown the Welshman around extensively at Ajax’s sports complex in the past few days.

“I’m impressed with the facility and the organization”, says the former Wrexham player, who used to have Liverpool’s U-12 to U-16 teams under his charge. In that role, he had visited de Toekomst before, during the AEGON Future Cup. “But now that I’m here alone, I really have the chance to take it all-in and learn a lot. I hope Ajax can learn from Liverpool, too. That would make this information exchange useful for both parties. It’s always good to see how youth academies in other countries are organized. Especially a world famous one like Ajax’s.”

Cooper returns to Liverpool on Thursday with a wealth of acquired information. “Thanks to my ‘all area pass’ from de Toekomst, I’ve have every chance to learn about Ajax’s youth academy. I hope I’ll get to speak to Frank de Boer at some point. And of course, Dennis Bergkamp. He’s a legend in England. I’d love to pick his brain, too.”

AFC Ajax will be without midfielder Siem de Jong for their UEFA Champions League Group D match at Olympique Lyonnais

AFC Ajax will be without midfielder Siem de Jong for their UEFA Champions League Group D match at Olympique Lyonnais while Theo Janssen is also an injury doubt.

AFC Ajax have lost Siem de Jong for their UEFA Champions League trip to Olympique Lyonnais after the 22-year-old suffered a thigh injury while fellow midfielder Theo Janssen is a doubt after succumbing to a hamstring problem.

Ajax’s 6-4 defeat at FC Utrecht on Sunday was painful in more ways than one for De Jong, as the Dutch international was substituted after four minutes of the Eredivisie encounter after tearing his thigh muscle while sprinting for the ball.

De Jong, who has featured in all four of Ajax’s Group D games to date and scored in the recent 4-0 victory over GNK Dinamo Zagreb, is expected to be out for between four and six weeks. Such a lay-off also renders him a fitness worry for the matchday six visit of Real Madrid CF on 7 December.

Janssen, meanwhile, has sustained a hamstring complaint which will sideline the 30-year-old for a fortnight. The former FC Twente playmaker and last season’s Dutch player of the year faces a race against time to make the journey to Lyon on 22 November. Ajax, fifth in the Dutch top flight after 12 matches, lie second in their UEFA Champions League section, three points above their matchday five opponents.

Other Ajax News
Netherlands midfielder Siem de Jong has extended his stay at AFC Ajax by two years after agreeing a new deal with the Eredivisie champions that ties him to the club until June 2015. Dutch international Siem de Jong has prolonged his stay with AFC Ajax after signing a contract extension keeping him at the Amsterdam club until June 2015.

The new deal adds two years to the contract of a player who had a huge part in Ajax’s 2010/11 Eredivisie title-winning campaign – attacking midfielder De Jong scored 12 goals in 32 games. The 22-year-old also made his international debut against Ukraine last August.

“My goal is to win the championship again and to contribute as much as possible to the team,” said De Jong, who joined the Godenzonen from De Graafschap in September 2007 and has made 86 league appearances in four seasons at the Amsterdam ArenA. “I am happy to extend my contract because I really like it here. Ajax are good for my development.”

Here is a game barely burdened by footballing discussion in its build-up.

To set aside an interminable poppy dispute and those questions about the national captain’s attitude to race in modern Britain, the visit of the world and European champions to Wembley on Saturday is likely to expose some uncomfortable footballing truths for their hosts.

Here is a game barely burdened by footballing discussion in its build-up. Perhaps this comes as a result of the expectation that a rather under-strength England team will be easily dispatched by a Spain team flush with many of the stars who have guided them to primacy.
This will be the Spanish national team’s first visit to Wembley since a controversial penalty shootout defeat in the quarter-finals of Euro ’96. On English shores, it is a day remembered for the heroics that powered David Seaman to national celebrity and Stuart Pearce to fist-pumping vindication; in Spain, there remains a latency of feeling about two goals chalked off wrongly for offside.

Since then, these two superpowers have only met on friendly occasions, with the Spanish victorious every time since a rainy February night in 2001 when the Sven Goran Eriksson era began with a 3-0 win at Villa Park. In the three matches since, England have not scored against the Spanish, and rarely looked like doing so either.
The last meeting came in February 2009, when goals from David Villa and Fernando Llorente were just reward for Spanish dominance. It was a night when David Beckham matched the outfield England cap record of 108, as once held by Bobby Moore, but this was no night of celebrations for a country’s favourite son.
“One step into reality” is how Fabio Capello described it when speaking in Seville that night. “I hope in the future we will win. We tried to play like we do usually, but the pressing Spain did to win the ball back showed they are a very good team.”

Since then, how England play usually is a cause for national derision, with an Italian maestro seemingly powerless to effect improvement. His England regime has not overturned the reality served in Seville. Indeed, the intervening years have been especially hard on the realism front. England, a nation that gets so excited, and usually so hopeful about its team’s chances at tournaments is preparing for the worst. A sell-out crowd is a tribute to a country enveloped and devoted to football. They will come to see a footballing masterclass, and expect the Spanish to supply it. England player to watch: Daniel Sturridge
There is, of course, one player on whom many eyes will be placed. But we will press on from there, and let that issue take its course. His Chelsea team-mate is a young man of whom much is expected, but it has not yet been delivered. The early-season signs were that he was deserving of an England place, and many were confused that he was not called for the Montenegro game. He now has his head, but in reduced circumstances, as recent performances have been less impressive, with Arsenal a particular disappointment. His self-confidence is undoubted, and his country needs a forward option in the absence of Wayne Rooney.

Ajax scored twice in each half to beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-0

AMSTERDAM (AP) Ajax scored twice in each half to beat Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 on Wednesday and stay second behind runaway leader Real Madrid in Group D of the Champions League.

Gregory van der Wiel drilled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from a difficult angle in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead after a clever backheel from Christian Eriksen.
Miralem Sulejmani, back in the Ajax lineup after a brief injury layoff, doubled the lead five minutes later after finishing off a move started by Siem de Jong.
De Jong made it 3-0 in the 65th with a 10-meter shot before substitute Nicolas Lodeiro scored the fourth in injury time.
“I really liked the way we played tonight,” Van der Wiel said. “It’s always nice if you can score a goal.”
Ajax is second with seven points, three ahead of Lyon. The Dutch side is assured of earning at least a Europa League berth. Real Madrid leads Group D with 12 points after winning all four of its games. Dinamo could have pulled one back a minute into the second half when Luis Ibanez fired a long-range drive, which Kenneth Vermeer saved but spilled back into play before captain Jan Vertongen make a clearance.
De Jong had a chance to put the scoreline beyond Dinamo’s reach after perfectly controlling Toby Alderweireld’s pass in the area but goalkeeper Ivan Kelava made a point-blank save.

“The scoreline is a nice present but I think what’s important is we played as a team,” said Ajax coach Frank de Boer.
Earlier on, some miscommunication between Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen almost led to a Dinamo goal in the 16th but the Ajax captain recovered to clear the ball away from danger.

After missing a couple of chances in the opening minutes, Ajax had Van De Wiel to thank after his ferocious shot gave Kelava no chance.
The second goal was just as eye-catching. Eyong Enoh powered past the Dinamo midfield before the Cameroon midfielder picked out De Jong, who laid the ball into Sulejmani’s path. The Serbian striker dribbled past a badly-positioned Kelava before prodding the ball into an open net.
Van der Wiel started the move that led to Ajax’s third. From the right flank, the Netherlands international teased past two Dinamo defenders before flighting a cross toward goal. Eriksen intervened with another flick leaving De Jong with a simple task of beating Kelava from close range.
Substitutes Lodeiro and Lorenzo Ebecilio combined to score the fourth, wrapping up a win that gives Ajax hope of finishing second in the group.

Real Madrid Lyon 2-0. The review. Next match Lyon Ajax

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 24th minute by curling home a free kick.
The Portugal winger then notched his 100th goal for the Spanish club by converting a penalty in the 69th after Lyon fullback Mouhamadou Dabo had fouled him.
Madrid tops Group D with 12 points, five clear of Ajax, which routed Dinamo Zagreb 4-0. Lyon remains third with four points.
“We knew a win here would secure qualification,” Ronaldo said. “We played well but it was a difficult game against a tough team. We are happy that we’re through.”
Madrid is the only team in the group stage that has won all its matches and has yet to concede a goal. It outplayed Lyon by stifling the hosts in midfield with its pressing.
Madrid striker Karim Benzema collected a through ball from Mesut Oezil to be clean through but was denied by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 10th.
The Spanish side threatened again in the 23rd. Oezil found Benzema with a backheel flick but Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff stopped the play by shoving Benzema on the edge of the box.

Ronaldo exploited a crack in the Lyon wall from the ensuing free kick to place the ball out of the goalkeeper’s reach.
Madrid came close to adding a second goal before halftime. Lassana Diarra played Oezil in but Lloris came off his line to knock the ball away in the 29th.
The France goalkeeper saved his team again in the 32nd by parrying a shot from Benzema from Ronaldo’s pass.
Madrid winger Angel Di Maria led a counterattack in the 44th and fed Oezil but the Germany playmaker’s tame effort was no trouble for Lloris.
Lyon nearly equalized twice against the run of play. Winger Jimmy Briand chested down a high cross from Dabo to shoot straight at goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the 35th.
On the stroke of halftime, Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis won the ball in midfield to release Gourcuff down the right wing, but Casillas tipped Gourcuff’s powerful strike over the bar.

Ronaldo threatened a couple of times in the second half before firing the spot kick into the middle of the net to make it 2-0.
“We faced a team that was stronger than us,” Lloris said. “I think it’s probably the best team in Europe right now.”
Lloris prevented Madrid from adding a third goal by stopping a low curling shot from Di Maria in the 73rd.
Lyon almost scored a consolation goal in the 78th but Briand’s header from a corner by Gourcuff crashed against the bar. The Lyon winger beat the offside trap to have another chance in the 89th but his chip sailed wide.
